The Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that Liverpool had the opportunity to sign Sergio Aguero from Independiente before he joined Atletico Madrid.
Benitez was the boss at Liverpool between 2004-2010 and he confirmed that Aguero turned down the Reds to move to Spain in 2006 for around €23 million.
He told reporters, "I was Liverpool manager, they offered him to us as a young player for big, big money,
"He signed for Atletico Madrid.
"He was a player that we knew. We were following him. We knew he was a very good player then."
