Bayern winger Kingsley Coman to be out for "few weeks" with knee injury

Thomas Tuchel had to replace Kingsley Coman before the half-hour mark in the Bundesliga game against Augsburg at the weekend. The French winger left the stadium on crutches and he feared the worst. The following day, the club issued a statement to confirm that the winger has a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee. The prognosis is serious but not the worst.

And why isn't it the worst? Because three other ligaments support the damaged joint, the lateral collateral ligament, the posterior cruciate ligament and the dreaded anterior cruciate ligament. The latter is the one that tends to end the seasons of elite players who tear it. In the case of the Frenchman, his absence will be, according to the medical report, "weeks", which gives hope that he will not be out for the whole season.

"FC Bayern will be without Kingsley Coman over the coming weeks after the France international suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee in Saturday’s 3-2 win away at Augsburg. The diagnosis follows examination by Bayern’s medical department", reads the statement.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund als commented on the France international's injury. "It’s obviously a real blow. But knowing Kingsley, he’ll come back even stronger. We wish him a speedy recovery."
