Bayern sign Champions League veteran on a free

Bayern Munich completed an unusual and potentially successful signing on Tuesday. The German club announced the signing of Dimitri Oberlin, a Swiss player of Cameroonian origin who was without a club.

Oberlin, 23, is coming to reinforce the Bavarian club's youth team, but he is no stranger to the game. The striker made his breakthrough with Basel a couple of seasons ago in the Champions League. He played great games against City, scored three goals against Benfica... and disappeared.

He is a player who was once followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid, but who stayed at Basel due to the high demands of the Swiss team to let him leave.

After that spectacular 2017-18 campaign, in which he scored ten goals in 37 games at just 20 years of age, he stopped being played. He hardly played at all in the following season and tried out for Empoli and Belgian side Zulte-Waregem.

He failed to convince and returned to Basel, where he spent practically the whole of 2020. Without a team and without playing a game since September, Bayern have taken a gamble on him... but he will have to earn it and start again from the bottom.
