Batshuayi and Fabregas can prove key for Chelsea, says Nevin

Former Blues winger Pat Nevin has backed "so-called back-up" stars Cesc Fabregas and Michy Batshuayi to prove key over the Christmas period.

Michy Batshuayi and Cesc Fabregas are capable of making Chelsea even better, according to former player Pat Nevin.

Manager Antonio Conte has guided the Blues to the top of the Premier League table on the back of a nine-game winning run, which includes victories over the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham.

Chelsea are currently in the midst of a run of five games in 20 days, beating West Brom in their last outing, and Nevin - who spent five years with the club in the 1980s - has backed summer signing Batshuayi and Fabregas to pitch in amid the fixture pile up over Christmas.

"At the moment Chelsea still haven't found out just how good Michy Batshuayi will be with a run in the side. He might be spectacular, a revelation even," Nevin wrote in his column for the club's official website.

"Also one of our so-called 'back-up' players Cesc Fabregas has been doing quite well when he has been brought into the side of late, and I am sure you have noticed he does tend to link up pretty well with Diego [Costa].

"And that's before you even start to think about Branislav [Ivanovic], JT [John Terry], Willian and Oscar who, because they haven’t been starting during this fabulous run, would be considered elsewhere as back-up players.

"It is as ludicrous to think of any of them in that way as it is to think of Cesc like that."

Batshuayi, 23, has made just 12 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea so far this season, whereas Fabregas has only turned eight times.

Chelsea face bottom-of-the-table Sunderland on Wednesday before travelling to Crystal Palace and then hosting Bournemouth and Stoke City to conclude 2016.
