Leo Messi is used to Barca fans doing things no one expects. But he cannot have recalled anything similar in his time at Barca because the last time it happened, he was just starting off. We are talking about the handkerchief waving prior to the Barca-Eibar match. "Bartomeu, resign" was the chant.
The last time this happened was on 13th May 2007 when Sobis' goal for Betis left Barcelona without the league title. But the recent off the field issues seem to have made the fans fed up.
The controversy over the defamation campaign by the club seems to have been the straw which broke the camel's back. It was not just a small section of the support either. It was very obvious as were the chants.
What is more, after five minutes of the match, when Eibar had a goal disallowed for offside, the chants timidly returned. This time they were aimed more at the board rather than the president.
It is worth remembering that there were reports recently that the only reason Josep Maria Bartomeu would bring forward elections would be if the Camp Nou protested like they did versus Eibar.
