Names such as Mauricio Pochettino, Marcelo Gallardo and even Massimiliano Allegri were rumoured, but eventually they chose Quique Setien.
The Cantabrian coach was chosen to take the reigns at Barcelona, who, once again, have bet on a national product.
This has been a re-occuring theme in recent years, because five out of the last six coaches (including Setien) have been Spanish.
After Rijkaard's exit, Barca gave the helm of the team to Pep Guardiola in 2008. The Santpedor man coached there until 2012.
After that the failed Tito Vilanova took to the bench and continued the Barcelona trend of hiring coaches from Spain.
The only exception came in the 2013/14 season. This was where Argentine, Gerardo Martino was the first team coach with more than questionable results.
With his exit, the now Mexico national team coach, Luis Enrique arrived. He landed at the Camp Nou in 2014 and stayed on as Barca coach until 2017.
His successor was Ernesto Valverde, who has just ended his time as coach in January.
The testimony is now in the hands of Setien, which confirms the team's reliance on coaches from their own country.
