Barcelona ready to reward De Jong with new deal

Fortunately for both him and the Barcelona faithful, the shadow of the inconsistent, often peripheral Frenkie de Jong of old seems to be fading by the day.
His commanding display in the most recent Clasico was the crowning moment of an impressive resurgence — one that looks set to bring positive consequences come the end of the campaign.
As per AS, a contract extension is now closer than ever. The Dutchman has firmly established himself in midfield under Hansi Flick and has even taken to the captain's armband with remarkable ease.
Beyond his on-pitch excellence against Real Madrid, his leadership — particularly in vocal confrontations with referee Hernandez Hernandez — has not gone unnoticed within the club.
Back in 2022, De Jong was closer to leaving than staying. Barcelona were in desperate need of funds, and Manchester United seemed poised to ease the club's financial strain.
In the end, and despite strong pressure from the board and Xavi — who was following orders from above — De Jong stayed put. He has since grown into a pivotal figure, surpassing even Gavi in the current pecking order.
Talks between the two parties have already taken place, but negotiations are expected to accelerate once the season is over. With his current deal running until 30 June 2026, discussions over an extension are set to begin with a newfound sense of mutual satisfaction.
The club are pleased with his performances — and he, in turn, is content with the influence he now commands at Barcelona.
