The Spanish midfielder's contract at Manchester United expires in the summer and his doubts over renewing arose interest in Barcelona a few months ago.
Catalan paper 'Sport' says that Barcelona have not given up completely on Mata. His contract ends in June and has therefore been free to negotiate his future since 1st January.
According to the same media outlet, Barcelona and Mata's inner circle have been in contact to discuss a possible arrival at the Camp Nou.
Man United would be trying to extend Mata's contract, but while the English club is only thinking of giving him a one year contract, the Spaniard wants two to carry on at Old Trafford.
This dispute would be the main obstacle and the main reason why a contract extension has not been agreed and Barca hope to take advantage and nip`in there to seal the striker's services.
