Barca look to seal Ronald Araujo until 2026
Ronald Araujo is one of Barcelona's positive points in the middle of his defence in recent campaigns. Even though Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet's performances have dipped recently, Araujo's have not. He looks a great player for the future.
You have to remember that the defender began the 2019-20 season in the B team and he ended up getting in ahead of Todibo and forming part of the first team when the situation required.
This season, Barca wanted to sign Eric Garcia, although finally they had to give up on that because of the financial complications of the deal.
The signing of the former B-team player had relegated Araujo to fourth choice centre-back, but always ahead of an Umtiti who cannot get into the team. As Garcia did not move from Man City, Araujo has consolidated himself as the third choice centre-back and he shone against Sevilla when Lenglet was out. He will get another go in Turin against Juventus, but he will have even bigger boots to fill as Pique will be absent.
In any case, Barca have realised that they have a central defender who can play for them for many years and they are looking to renew his deal. Araujo signed from Uruguayan side Boston River for slightly less than two million euros. That seems like a bargain now.
Barca are looking to extend his deal until 2026 and double his buyout clause to 200 million euros.
