Azpilicueta 'agrees' new Chelsea deal

According to reports in England, Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has become the latest player to commit his future to the club after agreeing to a new long-term contract.

The 'Blues' have been making a conscious effort in recent months to tie their best players down to new contracts as they look to ensure they maintain their impressive core and according to the 'Daily Mail', Azpilicueta is the latest player to pledge his long-term future to the club.

The Spaniard is currently thought to be earning around £120,000, with his contract running through until the summer of 2020. However, his new deal will see an improvement in both terms and duration, with it expected to be worth £150,000 per week until 2022.

Marcos Alonso and N'Golo Kante both recently put pen to paper on new five-year deals of their own as Chelsea look to avoid a repeat of the Thibaut Courtois situation, where the Belgian was able to force through a move or threaten to leave on a free.

Azpilicueta has been a key member of the Chlesea side since joining the club from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille in 2012, making almost 300 appearances for the Stamford Bridge-based side in all competitions.

Still only 29, the Pamplona-born defender has played in a variety of positions for Chelsea. After initially displacing Ashley Cole at left-back, he was later used on the right-hand side of a back three under Antonio Conte, before finally settling in his favoured right-back spot under Maurizio Sarri.

The 25-cap Spain international has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup and a Europa League in his six years in London, but will be hoping to add to that tally before his new deal expires.
