Football has gone down in history through many situations that will always remain in the memory of fans and reflected in books. In it's most recent history, Barcelona's historic comeback against PSG in a game full of controversy has definitely stuck in the minds of the masses.
The referee in charge was Deniz Aytekin, who was on everyone's lips after it was alluded that he may have favoured the Catalan club, with UEFA suspending him for a season after it in order to avoid further problems. Years later, Aytekin has been appointed Germany's best referee.
While talking to German newspaper 'Bild' about his recent recognition, the interviewer recalled what happened that infamous Champions League night. Aytekin jumped in with another memory to dodge the question.
"I remember I didn't see a penalty on Marco Reus when he was still playing at Monchengladbach. They lost the match and the situation haunted me for quite some time. This had a lot of media repercussions and the fans reproached me for a long time," he said.
Aytekin often watches his matches again, where he realises what decisions and actions could have been different: "Sometimes you get close, but when you stop to analyse the game carefully, you tend to realise situations where you were lucky enough to not have that affect you and hurt you in the long run".
"When I realise that I'm more attentive to what's going on inside me, I start counting players. The brain can only think about one thing and this way I'm back to being focused," concluded the famous Aytekin explaining for that match.
