Atletico's early Club World Cup exit deals sporting and financial blow

They needed either a favour from the Seattle Sounders or to beat Botafogo by a margin of more than three goals. Neither scenario materialised, and Atletico's campaign came to an abrupt end in the group stage.
It was a cruel farewell, despite collecting six points from a possible nine in a group featuring both the Champions League and Copa Libertadores winners — yet an exit nonetheless.
The early elimination from FIFA's tournament is not only a sporting setback but also a financial blow for a club whose fans are demanding significant reinforcements ahead of the new season.
Atletico leave the United States with €22.73 million banked: €19.27 million for participating in the tournament itself, and a further €3.46 million from their two wins in the group stage.
While a considerable sum, it still falls short of expectations. As reported by Marca, they had set their sights on at least a quarter-final place — a target that would have brought in an additional €17.8 million (€6.47 million for reaching the last 16 and another €11.32 million for progressing to the last eight).
The only silver lining is that the squad will now enjoy a few extra days of rest — a welcome break ahead of what will be a crucial season for Diego Simeone, who is set to begin his 15th campaign in charge of the club since taking over in 2011/12.
