According to souces in South America, the Colombian side released a statement to CONMEBOL, South American football's governing body, asking for Chapecoense to be awarded the Copa Sudamericana and give the title up as a hommage to victims of the air disaster.
In the early hours of this Tuesday morning, Chapecoense travelled by plane to play the first leg of the cup final in Colombia, but the plane lost signal with the control tower and ran out of fuel, crashing close to the city of Medellin. So far, it has been confirmed that 76 people have died and five are being treated in hospital.
'ESPN' also report that Atletico Nacional have asked for CONMEBOL to hand the trophy to Chapecoense.
