Both teams put out a strong starting line-up ahead of this Champions League last-16 tie. Unfortunately for the Italian giants, Sami Khedira didn't feature in this clash after undergoing surgery for 'atrial arrhythmia', an irregular heartbeat.
Ronaldo, Dybala and Mandzukic started up front for Juventus while Atletico fielded Griezmann and Costa in an attempt to clinch the victory.
After just seven minutes Juventus had a brilliant chance to take the lead with a Ronaldo free-kick. Gimenez brought the Portuguese star down outside the box and Ronaldo assumed his trademark stance as he lined up to take the free-kick himself. He released an absolute rocket of a shot to make life difficult straight away for the Atletico keeper, who did extremely well to get a palm behind the ball and stop it from sneaking under the crossbar and in.
The remainder of the half was a series of missed opportunities for both teams as neither could find that all important finish, much to the frustration of both managers. Both teams struggled to hold extended periods of possession and build chances as we witnessed a more frantic, end-to-end style of football.
Tensions continued to build as players were hitting the deck left, right and centre after some vicious challenges. A flurry of fouls and free-kicks later and we approached half-time.
It was Juventus who started the second-half off much stronger as they built chance after chance, threatening Oblak's goal. One of which was a long range effort from Ronaldo, who this time couldn't find the target and his shot sailed over the crossbar.
As a result of Juve's pressure, Atletico made several substitutions in quick succession to try and rejuvenate the side and inject some pace in front of goal, with Alvaro Morata and Lemar.
70 minutes in and Morata looked to have scored the opener for Atletico, however the referee immediately called on VAR to confirm a foul on Chiellini in the build up, meaning the score remained at 0-0. The home fans didn't have to wait much longer for Atletico to draw first blood as Jose Gimenez netted a rebound for his side. Juve fans might have said he fouled Bonucci just beforehand, but the referee chose not to consult VAR this time and the goal stood.
Just five minutes later and Atletico doubled their lead with a stylish finish from Diego Godin. Griezmann lofted the ball in from a free-kick which caused chaos in the box as Godin flicked it in for 2-0.
With four added minutes, Juventus didn't leave themselves much time to mastermind a comeback to advance to the quarter-finals. That man Ronaldo had the clearest opportunity of the lot as he made contact with a long ball in but he couldn't get enough power on it and Oblak could let it fly over his crossbar.
That would be the final action of the Champions League action at the Wanda Metropolitano as the home side will take a healthy lead to Turin for the second-leg where they will have the away goal advantage.
