Atalanta had one of their good days, much to Empoli's disgrace. The 'Dea' were an unstoppable typhoon against whom their opponents had little chance.
A double from Ilicic, in less than half an hour, put the Bergamo side on the road to victory, although in the 30th minute Empoli got back into the game thanks to a goal from Federico di Francesco, son of Eusebio di Francesco, currently without a team after being sacked by Hellas.
With Toloi and Romagnoli injured, the game went into half-time at 1-2, and four minutes after the restart a Viti own goal ended the home side's hopes of getting anything going against Atalanta's opponents.
With little to lose, Empoli tried to press, but did not trouble Musso too much (seven shots in total, only three on target including the goal), while Vicario struggled and struggled.
Atalanta finished the match having taken 22 shots, seven on target, four of which were on goal. However, Vicario made some fine saves, such as the penalty he saved from Ilicic in the 66th minute, denying his opponent a hat trick.
The fourth and final goal was scored by Duvan Zapata off a pass from Pasalic. Atalanta took three more points and moved back into contention for the top places, while Empoli maintained a small cushion from the danger zone thanks to the three wins that have brought them their only points so far.
