Marco Asensio's future is, undeniably, at Real Madrid. Paying his 700 million euro buyout clause is the only way the big European clubs can get hold of the man from the Balearic Islands. His 2018-19 seeded lots of doubts in his mind, but neither in the club nor in Zidane's mind. The Frenchman believes that among his many obligations is to get Asensio back to his best. The attacker, by the way, does not want to move.
In this point, it is worth pointing out that it was Zidane who gave him his full backing three summers ago when he gave him a spot in the starting XI despite his youth and inexperience. He gradually started to figure in his plans, with the odd great goal and ended up being decisive at the back end of the season. He scored, for example, in the semi-final and final of the 2016/17 Champions League.
One season later, the '20', he stood out from the beginnning with two strikes in the Spanish Super Cup, both at the Camp Nou and at the Bernabeu. A great performance against Valencia continued to bring him lots of praise, although on occasions it was excessive. There was talk of him winning the Ballon D'or, Asensio's Real Madrid and all of that. In the end, all that pressure took its toll on him.
From that to his worst campaign, the season which has just finished. Lopetegui did not get the best out of him, Solari left him out of the team and Zidane, however much he tried, did not manage to bring back Asensio's electric football. To make things worse, that phrase in which he assured that he should not have to be one doing the bulk of the work did not go down well with some fans.
But everything has changed, Zidane's new Madrid aims high and Asensio has a place in the squad, despite the arrival of Hazard. Zidane explained what he wants from him this season and the left footer decided not to go to the Euro Under-21 Championships. After playing for the Spain senior team, the only thing in his mind is to rest and be back on top for pre-season.
It will be the moment in which he will have to try and be himself again. Only in this way will he be able to get his status in the squad back and dazzle once again a Bernabeu which has not lost faith in him. He is only 23 years old, even if some people forget that, and he has loads of talent in that left foot of his.
