Reports that Neymar Jr feels unsettled and unhappy in the French capital began to emerge around the same time that Paris Saint-Germain were knocked out of the Champions League. The Brazilian transferred to the French side a record-breaking deal in August of last year. Amid reported interest in Neymar from former club Barcelon and Real Madrid, Gibson spoke to 'SkySports' to advise European teams against breaking the transfer-fee record once again to purchase Neymar this summer.
Firstly, the Brazilian forward is injured. Neymar is currently recuperating in his native Brazil after surgery on a foot injury. Gibson questioned why teams would be willing to invest hundreds of millions for a player who is yet to pass a fitness test to return to the pitch. He says ''what club are around that could pay €300-400m for him? You cannot spend that amount of money on a player who could be injured.'' Adding that ''he missed the Real Madrid game.''
Then Gibson raised the issue of money being a deciding factor. He says that ''everybody knew that the move to PSG was not going to satisfy him, apart from money.'' Though Gibson is quick to clarify that he is not suggesting ''he only went for the money, but I and most people knew that he was going to miss that dynamic of playing in Clasicos.'' Reportedly, Neymar misses the fast paced dynamic of LaLiga and the intense rivalry at the top of the league. Additionally, the 26-year-old only moved to PSG in August 2017, thus it seems highly unlikely that Barcelona would be willing to pay two-fold what they sold him for less than a year ago.
Gibson adds that he thinks ''we all knew the reasons why he left was the amount of money he was going to get paid and he was going to get star billing in a country, a league and a club, which should be enough to satisfy any sportsman." Given that Neymar was offered what any sportsperson wants for their career and remains unsatisfied ''there will be an element of mistrust'' of the player amongst top-tier teams.
