After the departure of Sergio Ramos and the sale of Varane to Man Utd, Real Madrid want to work on signing defenders, one of the areas most affected this summer.
Madrid's transfer policy is clear, at least for this summer: if Mbappe joins the club, the Frenchman will be the only signing this summer, but it is very likely he will not move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
If they do not sign Mbappe, Real Madrid will go for a central defender. Pau Torres has been linked with a move there, but Ancelotti has proposed the signing of a player he knows well. According to 'La Repubblica', it is the French-Senegalese player Koulibaly.
Koulibaly has a contract until 30th June 2023 for Napoli, who is considered not for sale. But he could leave for 60 million euros, an amount which Real Madrid cannot afford to pay.
PSG and Man Utd are also after hm, but they do not need players in that position and he would be a secondary reinforcemet. Ancelotti knows him well and Koulibaly would be key for Real Madrid. They are waiting to see what will happen with Mbappe before making a move.
