It's fair to say that footballers do okay for themselves financially these days, whilst goal bonuses are a standard part of the modern footballer's contract but did you know that one Premier League player is still given a goal bonus by his mum?

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles headed home a second half corner for the second time in a week to give his side the victory over Stoke on Saturday delighting 'Toon' fans and friends and family alike, with the exception of his mum.

Lascelles converted Matt Ritchie's corner to propel Newcastle to victory againstMark Hughes' side less than a week after scoring the decider against Swansea.

His purple patch has got Newcastle fans dreaming of a top-half finish in their first season back in the top flight, though his mum has taken to Twitter to complain that her son is 'costing me a fortune'.

The reason? It turns out Mrs Lascelles has been paying Jamaal a goal bonus of £5 ever since his days as a schoolboy at Nottingham Forest.

Despite the complaints, we're sure that Mrs Lascelles will be hoping that her son maintains his fine run of form.

The Newcastle skipper felt that the result on Saturday was a fine demonstration of the strength of character that exists in Rafa Benitez' squad this season, telling the club website: 'It just goes to show how much character we have. A couple of seasons back, we'd go a goal down or concede a goal and heads would drop. We'd be looking at each other like, 'Who's going to step up?'

'But everyone steps up, the 11 of us. This group of boys is excellent - we just keep going.

'We're an ambitious bunch of players, we're a really tight group of lads and we're friends. We work hard for each other on the pitch.'
