Fernando Santos revealed his 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup on Thursday, with some 10 members of the side that was crowned European champion just two years ago left at home.

The squad anouncement lead to plenty of discussion about the players that were included, but the real sub-plot was in those who were left out.

Four players in particular were notably by their absences, with Danilo Pereira missing out through injury, Barcelona pair Andre Gomes and Nelson Semedo left out and Eder, the matchwinner in Paris, also failing to secure a spot on the plane.

Meanwhile, Renato Sanches, who anounced himself as one of the biggest talents in Europe just two years ago was also left out after enduring arguably the worst season of his fledgling career on loan at Swansea.

The 10 European champions that will not be present in Russia are as follows:

Goalkeepers: Eduardo.

Defenders: Vieirinha, Eliseu and Ricardo Carvalho.

Midfielders: Andre Gomes, Danilo Pereira and Renato Sanches.

Forwards: Nani, Rafa Silva and Eder.
