Tottenham Hotspur are set to open contract talks with Toby Alderweireld, according to 'Sky Sports'.

It is thought that Spurs will discuss a new deal with the former Atletico Madrid and Southampton man when he returns from injury, after being out since October.

Alderweireld has two-and-a-half years left on his current deal at White Hart Lane, but Spurs want the Belgian top sign a new deal after impressing since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2014.

It was rumoured that the defender had a release clause of £25.4m, something which may well have been activated by potential suitors given that Alderweireld would generally be considered as one of, or if not the best defenders in Engalnd currently.

Tottenham have managed to tie down the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and most recently, Harry Kane, to new deals and Mauricio Pochettino is hoping that Alderweireld will be the next to commit his future to the club.

The 27-year-old is likely to return for Spurs' Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow, meaning that contract talks are likely to be imminent.
