The Lazio midfielder, formerly of Manchester United and West Ham, has joined Mexican club Atlas on a season-long loan.

The 24-year-old has appeared just eight times for the Serie A side since joining the club in 2015 and had a trial earlier this summer at Birmingham City.

Atlas, based in Guadalajara, are captained by former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, who in August denied accusations from the US of links to a drug cartel.

The former England U21 international played just 122 minutes over the entire 2016-17 season, having joined QPR on loan in January.

The midfielder was extremely highly-rated when he was part of the Manchester United academy and whilst his talent has never been in question, it is off-the-pitch incidents which have disrupted his career.
