According to reports in the 'Daily Mail', Vicente Guaita is expected to become Roy Hodgson's first January signing with a £3.5m deal set to be sealed this week.

Since he took over the managerial reigns in September, the former England manager has alternated between Wales international Waye Hennessey and club veteran Julian Speroni but hopes the signing of the 31-year-old could play an important role in the club's relegation battle.

Guaita joined Getafe in 2014 after playing nearly 100 games for Valencia, which included Champions League ties against elite European sides such as Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain

Crystal Palace have been hit by significant injuries to key players like Scott Dann, Jeffrey Schlupp, Andros Townsend, Jason Puncheon and Connor Wickham so the January transfer window offers the perfect opportunity to bring in some reinforcements.

However, the 70-year-old boss doesn't believe a lot of business will end up happening at Selhurst Park: "It is going to be a busy month, that is for sure. What actually happens at the end of it in terms of what players arrive here - if any - is another question altogether."

"I have sketched out the profiles, we have identified the areas where we would like some players to come in. Big question, are we going to find them?"

The 'Eagles' have experienced something of a revival since Hodgson took over and currently sit in twelfth place in the Premier League, but are only five points off the relegation zone.
