Despite Jose Mourinho's strong rebuttal on Friday, slamming speculation of a rift with Paul Pogba as "lies", it hasn't convinced the majority, with many still believing there are "quite obvious" issues between the pair which could lead to a "stand-off" down the road.

The Manchester United head coach tried his best to dispel rumours during his pre-match press conference on Friday, hitting back at the media for spreading "lies", but it seems to have had little effect.

English journalist Jason Burt, who writes for 'The Telegraph', is one of many who believes the Portuguese manager is hiding from the truth.

"At the very least there are strains," he told the 'Sunday Supplement'. "It's quite obvious that there's an issue and you can tell by the way Mourinho is talking about it. I'm not saying it's irrecoverable but it's quite serious. He's your most expensive player and, alongside [Alexis] Sanchez, your biggest star".

Burt continues: "You've got to try to resolve the situation. Mourinho's natural instinct is to put his foot down. That's what he'd expect to do and he'd expect Pogba to bow to his will. But Pogba has shown in the past, he's willing to put his own foot down and move on".

"It could develop into a bit of a stand-off or it could blow over quite quickly if he gets back into the team. It will be interesting to see how he's used in the team when he gets back in".

The French midfielder did not feature in United's 2-0 FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town on Saturday, reportedly due to illness, but with these rumours persisting it will be hard to definitively dispel speculation of a rift.
