As well as speaking about the match against Poland and what he expects from the last 16 clash against Australia, Leo Messi wanted to settle the controversy with Robert Lewandowski once and for all: "What happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch."

One of the events from Poland-Argentina was Messi denying Lewandowski his apology. The Barcelona striker struggled in an action with Lionel Messi and the referee called a foul. Lewandowski quickly approached him to apologise and the Argentinian player ignored him.

However, both players spoke cordially at the end of the match. Messi settled once and for all the controversy with the Barcelona player and the incident they had during the match.

"I was taught that everything that happens on the pitch stays on the pitch. It's not going to come out of me something that we say to each other in private," the PSG striker said.

The controversy between these two players comes from Lewandowski's words about Messi after winning the Ballon d'Or 2021. The Argentinian footballer claimed that Lewandowski deserved to win it in 2020 but he thought they were "empty words".

Lewandowski explained his duel with the Argentine: "It was interesting. We exchanged a few words, but nothing special," he concluded.
