Real Madrid will today find out if the Appeals Committee decide to overturn the sanction given to them by fielding an illegible player during their third round Copa del Rey match against Cadiz.
Denis Cheryshev, who had already picked up three yellow cards during last season’s competition with Villarreal, should have served a one match suspension.
During the course of the day, an appeals committee will study the case presented by Real Madrid, who are looking to overturn their suspension from the competition and a 6,001€ fine given to the club.
Both committees are usually unanimous in their decision making, so it seems unlikely that Madrid will make any progress today. If the decision goes against them for a second time, their only other option would be to take it up with the ‘Administrative Tribunal of Sport’ (ATF) which has complete independence from the Spanish Football Federation in its decision making.
However, Madrid will hold onto hope that the ATF will be willing to overturn the sanction given to them, as they did with the Lorca feminine side who were given a similar sanction. Madrid will be hoping to prove, as Lorca did, that nobody at the club new about the players sanctioning.
