Pundits working on the BBC's coverage of England's victory over Tunisia on Monday night were left stunned when match-winner Harry Kane was denied a penalty.

During the first half of the match, there was an incident where it looked as though the England skipper was being deliberately held back in the box as he looked to get to a set-piece.

Earlier in the match, Tunisia were given a penalty for an incident involving Kyle Walker, but this looked to be a lot more obvious than the challenge from the Man City defender.

Speaking about the incident, former England captain Alan Shearer believed it was a clear penalty in favour of the Three Lions

"He’s not even looking at the ball. That’s even worse than the one that was given.

"It is a clear and obvious penalty, he’s not even looking at Kane and he's got hold of him and dragging him down."

The incident not being given brings in to question the effectiveness of the newly introduced VAR system, which is supposed to rectify any major errors that the on-field officials commit.

"This is what VAR was brought in for. The guys in Moscow should be looking at that. If the referee hasn’t seen it then fair enough but why aren’t they looking at it?" Shearer asked.

England went on to win the game 2-1, with a 92nd minute header from Kane. The win puts them second in Group G, behind Belgium who beat Panama 3-0 earlier on Monday.
