German police are looking for ex-Bundesliga player Steve Gohouri after the Ivory Coast international vanished after claiming he was heading to Paris to see his family.

His family travelled from France to Germany to report his disappearance.

The 34-year-old defender, who had spells at Wigan Athletic, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Moechengladbach during his career, attended his current club's Christmas party last Friday.

Gohouri currently plays for TSV Steinbach in the German fourth division.

Gohouri, who won 13 caps for the Ivory Coast, told team-mates he was going to see family in Paris, but never arrived in the French capital.

His family have travelled from France to file a missing person's report in Duesseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, the state in which he has a registered address.

Steinbach, whom he only joined at the start of December, said they are shocked by his disappearance.

"We are all speechless," Steinbach coach Thomas Brdaric told local paper RevierSport.

"Steve and I said goodbye to each other last Friday.

"He told me that he was going to travel to his family in Paris, but it's become clear that he never arrived.

"In about two weeks, you get to know someone a little.

"They were very intense weeks for us, from a sporting point of view.

"There is speculation, and I hope that it's not true, that he had personal problems and has abandoned his responsibilities.

"He shouldn't do that to his family or his employer.

"We all hope that Steve will shed some light on this as quickly as possible."
