Benzema within touching distance of Messi
The French striker for Real Madrid is just one goal off Leo Messi in the race for the La Liga Pichichi. This Sunday is key and both will get a good amount of media attention.
Since Cristiano Ronaldo left, Benzema has gone from being a passer to a goalscorer, something he himself has admitted and a role he really enjoys playing.
Goals have been split among several Real Madrid player, but Benzema scored once again after an important goal drought. His goal was enough to give 'Los Blancos' victory against Atletico at the Bernabeu. A great goal for the team in the Spanish capital.
In the last three encounters, the striker has scored two goals and given an assist, so it has been confirmed that he has put that goalscoring drought behind him. He is now without touching distance of Leo Messi.
The Argentine is just one goal above the Frenchman, so we could see a change at the top this Sunday, both end up level or Messi end up further in front. It is going to be an interesting race and Benzema wants to fight to be the top scorer.
At this stage of the season, Benzema had never been so close to the leading scorer because the closest he had got before was in the 2015-16 season when he was two behing Luis Suarez. Benzema fancies his chances this time though.
