The 2018-19 season was Virgil van Dijk. The '4' for Liverpool was the best central defender in the world in a year which no one dribbled past him and he made the fastest sprint of the year in Europe: 34.5km/h.
The Dutch central defender was the stand out in the Champions League and he achieved something which is really strange for a central defender: be the quickest in Europe all season.
Van Dijk reached 34.5 kilometres an hour (22 mph) in a sprint during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona which his team lost 3-0. In addition, he did it in the 91st minute which makes it even better because not even tiredness stopped him.
The central defender ran from box to box seconds from the end to cover the right flank while Barca were counterattacking. He started with five players in front with Busquets trying to pull him back... and he ended up being the man who was closest to the goal when Suarez tried to look for the decisive pass inside the box.
With a sprint at 34.5km/h, Van Dijk beat previous speeds registered by Leroy Sane (34.4km/h against Hoffenheim), Nemanja Radonjic (34.2km/h against RB Salzburg), Kyle Walker (34.2km/h against Tottenham) and Gareth Bale (33.8km/h versus Roma).
