Amorim insists Hojlund will come good despite fan criticism

Speaking after United's narrow 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on 16 May, Amorim praised Hojlund's attitude and commitment, despite the striker's ongoing struggles in front of goal.

The 22-year-old forward, brought in for £64 million in the summer of 2023, has found the net just four times in the Premier League this season, a return that has sparked frustration among supporters.

Many fans have called for tactical changes, including the deployment of Bruno Fernandes as a false nine, in a bid to address United’s blunt attack.

Amorim, however, remains convinced of the player's long-term value, emphasising his effort and progression rather than short-term output.

"He fights for every ball," the Portuguese manager noted. "He loses some duels, yes, but he wins others too. That's part of learning at this level."

He went on to say, "Rasmus is improving every week — not just physically, but in how he understands our game. He needs to keep working, and he will get there."

Reflecting on the broader situation, Amorim added: "I know people want results now, but sometimes growth takes time. I’ve seen what he does in training — the hunger, the attitude. That matters. It's my job to protect players when they're giving everything.

"We're building something here, and Rasmus is part of that." With United currently 17th in the table but still preparing for the Europa League final against Tottenham, the coach's backing of Hojlund may prove pivotal.
