The first goal came from a penalty, as Jeffrey Bruma brought down David Silva in the area as the pair both went for an Ilkay Gundogan cross. The Schalke man was given a yellow card for his troubles, before Sergio Aguero hit a panenka penalty straight down the middle.

The second came only four minutes later, with Raheem Sterling being released down the right, where he had the time and space to pick out Aguero, who stabbed home City's second. The referee didn't give the goal immediately however, with a VAR review necessary to see if Sterling had been offside. Although the Englishman did seem to be slightly ahead of his marker when the ball was played, it was not deemed sufficient to count as offside, and the goal stood.

Leroy Sane made it three just before the break when he was slipped in on goal before finishing coolly. The three goals left Schalke with a mountain to climb in the second half.
