Nacho is about to renew at Real Madrid. Two media outlets are now reporting about the agreement between the full back and the board. 'Goal' reports that they were close to agreeing to a deal until 2024 and, now, 'Cadena SER' reports that they just have to make the news official. It will finally be a two year deal until 2023.
It might be that this change has come about after negotiations between the club and the footballer's agent. The club have decided to make cuts during the transfer window and with regards to their footballers in the market. That is partly the reason why Sergio Ramos left. Nacho may accept having one less year on his contract so that his salary is better suited to the club's financial needs.
However, this is all speculation. Madrid still have to publish the terms of the detail on their official channels when both parties understand it is the moment to do so. We probably will not know how much money he will get, but the length of the contract will be clear.
The 2020-21 season showed how important Nacho is at Real Madrid. As a result of absences through injuries and coronavirus, Nacho became a key partner to Militao in defence and he helped cover for Ramos and Raphael Varane at the back. Ahead of next season and with Ancelotti in charge, he is set to be a useful player who will feature a lot.
Will he make the step up or get a secondary role?
Even though Nacho Fernandez starred in the 2020-21 campaign, his usual role at the club has been a back up. He came through the Real Madrid academy and went through all the age groups sides until he broke into the first time. He accepted not being the number one, but he is still vital.
Once he starts playing under Carlo Ancelotti, he may become even more important or he could remain an important back up.
