The President of Peru, Martin Vizcarra, expressed this Wednesday his indignation at the refereeing performance in the match that the Peruvian National Team lost on Tuesday by 2-4 against Brazil, in the South American qualifiers of the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
"I believe that a team like Brazil does not need the help of the referee to unbalance a match," said Vizcarra from the Government Palace in Lima, during the opening ceremony of the National Council of Mental Health (Conasame).
Vizcarra harshly criticised "as a fan and as a citizen" the performance of Chilean referee Julio Bascuñán, who gave two much-disputed penalties in favour of Brazil, which were key to the Brazil coming back from a match in which Peru took the lead on two occasions.
"On two occasions our players were ahead on their own merit, for their work, talent and commitment, and unfortunately the referee unbalanced a game that was anyone's," said Vizcarra without hiding his "displeasure" and "anger".
The president hoped that "no rude mistakes will be made in the future that will change the history of a match" and he trusted that "the FIFA organisation itself will be able to correct, through the internal mechanisms it has, those glaring flaws that affect the team, the fans and an entire country".
