700 million euros down the drain

UEFA caused a storm this Friday by announcing that Man City will not be able to participate in European competitions for the next two seasons. 

The punishment has come about because of irregularities committed by the English side when it comes to Financial Fair Play. 

They reportedly falsely increased their amount of income through sponsorship to allow for big money spending between 2012 and 2016. 

In that period of time, Man City spent more than 700 million euros in signings when they only earned just above 200. All of that thanks largely to the infractions previously mentioned. 

Man City always spent more than they earned in that period of time. -18 million in 2012-13, -105 in 2013-14, -72 the following season and then -140 and -166 in the next two campaigns. 

The 'Sky Blues' made big investments in those four years with Kevin de Bruyne (76 million euros) and Raheem Sterling (64) their biggest signings. 

Both arrived in summer 2015 in which, as 'AS' recalls, also saw Otamendi join for almost 45 million.

Previously, players like Fernandinho (40 million in 2013) and Mangala (45 million in 2014) signed for City. 

Although City's major spending (in the period investigated) came in 2016 with the arrival of Pep Guardiola as manager.

That summer, the Manchester based side splashed the cash by getting Stones (56 million), Sane (50), Gabriel Jesus (32)... In total, almost 200 million in that period. 

A year later, they spent more than 300 million in one sumer, but the 2017-18 season was not part of UEFA's initial investigation. 

Now, City will face (for now) a severe penalty for that excessive spending throughout several seasons. Now, the future of several of their stars is in doubt.
