Billed as the most significant signing in the post- Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford, Alexis Sanchez becoming red instead of blue, was touted as a potential game changer for title races in the coming years. After a poor couple of years at Manchester United, in which the player has been earning £391,000-a-week minus bonuses, the club have been left ruing the moment their neighbours walked away from the deal.
A year ago on Tuesday, United announced the arrival of Sanchez on social media. A now infamous social media gimmick of the forward playing the tune 'Glory, Glory Manchester United' on the Piano. In terms of star quality, Sanchez has it all. In fact, the player's story is due to be told shortly in a biographical film, 'Alexis, The Movie', which tells the story of his rise from the streets to one of the most famous stadiums in the world.
However for all the marketing and social media hysteria surrounding the player, Sanchez has yet to truly deliver on the pitch. A record of four goals in 12 months for the 'Red Devils', sees each strike worth roughly £6 million. A great deal of expense for any club, even one the size of Manchester United. Furthermore, the club are not even getting the most out of their marquee man in terms of appearances either. The Chilean has completed 90 minutes just once all season.
Currently working his way back to fitness after a hamstring injury; Sanchez faces an uphill task to get back on the United team sheet, with fellow forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, all hitting top form under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
So, instead of hitting the heights, Sanchez runs the risk of becoming another high-profile South American flop at Old Trafford, like Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao before him.
