FT: Villarreal 1-1 Juve! There was an entertaining raggedness to the 2nd half, and hosts will be relieved by an improved 45 minutes that was rewarded with Parejo's crafty finish after he slipped in behind the visiting defence to guide Capoue's cross beyond Szczesny. Juventus would almost certainly have taken this result before the start, and Vlahovic will never forget his first goal in the UCL. Both coaches will fancy their teams to progress and have plenty to contemplate ahead of the 2nd leg.

Vlahovic reminds Villarreal that he is always a threat when the ball is within striking distance of goal, turning smartly on the edge of the penalty area and drilling in a low shot that Rulli descends to his left to stop. The goalkeeper will feel he should have made that save, but the speed and abruptness of the effort demanded full alertness from him.

GOAL for Villarreal! The hosts are level! Capoue looks up just outside the penalty area on the left and spots Parejo lurking inside the penalty area, locating the midfielder with a ball beyond and between the opposition defenders. Parejo still has plenty to do, sweeping in a clever finish from a difficult trajectory at close range that bobbles beyond Szczesny and inside the goalkeeper's left-hand post. Joy for those enthusiastic home fans!
  • 58'
Eye-catching from Moreno, who lets Lo Celso's low diagonal pass go between his legs inside the penalty area, allowing it to reach Pedraza on the left. His low cut-back cross only results in Moreno hitting a shot into the turf that Szczesny claims with reasonable ease at his right-hand post.
  • 57'
Midfielders Locatelli and Rabiot are doing a terrific job in closing down spaces when Villarreal try to attack through the middle. Very difficult to pass from there.

Juventus HT sub: Leonardo Bonucci, the eternal skipper, on for Alex Sandro.
  • 45'
HT: Villarreal 0-1 Juventus! Part of the anticipation around this enticing showdown was new Juve signing Vlahovic's debut, and the hotshot showed why with that classy control and clinical finish to give his new team a lightning start here. Villarreal will be encouraged by some of the attacks they have put together since then, although Juve are well worth their lead and could have added to it, frequently looking dangerous through long passes that have succeeded in confusing the home defence.
  • 45'

  • 39'
Corner awarded to Villarreal, conceded by De Ligt.
  • 38'
Unlucky for Juve! Rabiot plays a delightful long diagonal ball deep into Villarreal territory on the left, where De Sciglio scampers forward and sends a low cross into the penalty area. McKennie meets the opportunity on the turn, only for Albiol to thwart his strike with a vital boot.
  • 35'
Juve prove dangerous again on the counter after earning possession in midfield. Morata did everything well until the most important thing of all: the shot.

  • 24'
Capoue concedes a free-kick for a foul on Morata.
  • 20'
At times, Juventus are moving to a back-three with Danilo and Alex Sandro playing on either side of De Ligt. Villarreal are now attacking with more determination now: they have had a couple of good chances in quick succession.
  • 18'
Chukwueze is starting to get into the game now and is causing problems down the Juve left. That's more like it, and the crowd respond.

  • 15'

GOAL for Juventus! What a start for Juve! Vlahovic receives a long pass from Danilo, hit by the defender from inside his own half, inside the penalty area on the right, controlling the ball expertly on his chest to allow himself to turn and fire a low shot on the turn between two defenders and the dive of Rulli at the goalkeeper's far post!
