The Latics sacked Caldwell on Monday following a difficult start to life in the Championship. Caldwell won promotion to England's second tier as Champions last season, but Wigan decided to act with the club sat in 23rd position in the Championship.
It was rumoured that Ryan Giggs was in contention for the job, but Warren Joyce is now expected to be named as manager.
Joyce's managed Belgian side Antwerp between 2006 and 2008 and also enjoyed a spell at Hull City between 1998 and 2000. Joyce masterminded the now Premier League club to a dramatic escape from relegation to the Conference during his time on Humberside.
The 51-year-old has spent the past eight years as an U-21 coach at Manchester United.
