Manchester United produced a professional display as they managed to take a two goal lead into the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Hull.
The visitors, playing with a makeshift defence which included midfielders Tom Huddlestone and David Meyler, managed to contain the home side for long periods of the game, but now require something special to reach the final of the EFL Cup.
As expected, United saw most of the possession and the chances in the first half. Henrikh Mkhitaryan should have put the home side ahead when he received the ball in acres of space in the Hull box, but he fired wide despite being given time to shoot.
The Armenian was then handed another good opportunity to put the Red Devils ahead, but fired high and wide from just outside the area.
Pogba then tried his luck with a trademark piledriver from distance, but Hull 'keeper Eldin Jakupovic managed to tip the ball over the bar.
Despite this, Hull came the closest to scoring in the first 45 minutes when Adama Diomande's cushioned header hit the post.
United continued to dominate in the second half and Wayne Rooney came within inches of beating Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 249 goals for the club, but dragged is effort just wide shortly after half-time.
Mourinho's men didn't have to wait too much longer to break the deadlock as Juan Mata put United ahead. Antonio Valencia found Mkhitaryan with a cross from the right and the Armenian headed back across goal for Mata who was lingering at the back post. Replays showed that the Spaniard was perhaps marginally offside, but the flag stayed down.
Diomande once again tried to open the scoring for Hull, but he couldn't keep his acrobatic effort down when makshift right-back David Meyler found him with a cross.
Pogba almost doubled United's lead with a free-kick that hit the post, but when it was looking that Hull would stay in the tie, Marouane Fellaini managed to make it 2-0 with a header in the 87th minute to make it a staisfying, if not spectacular night for United.
