A crucial fixture at Old Trafford with the outcome defining the end of the season for both Swansea and Manchester United. The hosts managed to stay in the fight for a top four stop after holding City to a draw at the Manchester derby, and a potential win meant Mourinho's side would temporarily go up to third, beyond Guardiola's team and Liverpool.
Swansea, on the other hand, were looking for a victory to take them out of the relegation zone, as three points drew them level with Hull City, with the Welsh side boasting a better goal difference.
It seemed like Paul Clement's team had more on the line as they walked out bravely to Old Trafford and quickly got hold of the ball. They frustrated United in the early minutes, passing the ball around well and preventing the hosts from linking up to create danger.
The Swans had the best chances in the first half, with Llorente, Sigurdsson and Ayew forcing great saves from De Gea. The home side created danger mainly down the left, despite Shaw limping off with yet another injury, Martial looked lively for the hosts.
Despite being second best throughout the entire half, Rashford went to ground inside the area to win his side a penalty. Rooney stepped up to slot the ball past Fabianski and put his team up just before half time. It was harsh for Swansea who went down after dominating the first forty-five minutes through a penalty call that was at the very least questionable.
It was a slightly different start to the second half as Manchester United took a step forward to keep Swansea at bay. Shots from Rooney and Martial could have increased the difference, but the captain struck his goalbound effort against the back of the Frenchman, who then in turn had his left-footed shot saved by Fabianski.
Mourinho's injury issues continued as yet another defender limped off after a clash with Llorente. Bailly had to be ushered off which prompted Mourinho to jokingly perform a mock 'warm-up' to Clement's amusement. Though the Swansea coach also had to watch as Montero went down grabbing his hamstring, having spent five minutes on the pitch.
However, when Rooney gave away a free kick in a perfect position for Sigurdsson, the Swansea midfielder made no mistake to capitalise. The Icelandic player showed his expertise by finding the top corner with ten minutes to go.
A point each seems like the most fair outcome. Manchester United go level on points with counterparts City though they do fail to break into the top four. Swansea are still in the relegation zone, two points behind Hull.
