Up until last night Marcelo Salas alone had scored more than any other footballer for the South American side, with nobody able to beat his 37 goals.
Alexis Sanchez had already beaten the likes of Zamorano, who stood at 34 goals, and with his goal in Chile's 3-1 victory over Venezuela, he matched the former Lazio and Juventus striker's record.
The 28-year-old could still go on to smash the relatively low record, and set one of his own, much harder to beat for future Chilean strikers.
