The defender earns £50,000-per-week - a very low amount when compared to other Premier League stars of his quality.
At the age of 28, Alderweireld is well aware that any new long-term deal with Spurs could be the last big contract of his career, and for that reason he is demanding a weekly salary of more than their current £110,000-per-week wage cap.
Spurs are, so far, unwilling to meet such a figure, but hope an agreement can be reached before the end of the season.
Alderweireld's current deal is due to run out in the summer of 2019, but Spurs do have the option to extend by a further year.
However, triggering that option would activate a release clause in the Belgian’s contract allowing him to leave the club for a mere £25m.
Other reports from across Europe have suggested Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City are monitoring the situation.
