Moussa Dembele’s early goal was cancelled out emphatically by PSG thanks to two goals from Neymar and Edinson Cavani and one each from Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Dani Alves.
Going into the game at the Parc de Princes, PSG were the only side remaining in this year’s Champions League yet to concede a goal, but Celtic got off to the perfect start and took the lead in the first minute.
The goal was straight off the training ground as Olivier Ntcham played a corner straight to Dembele inside the area, and the French striker fired first-time into the corner past Alphonse Areola to give the visitors a shock lead.
The home fans were stunned by the early goal, but their players didn’t take too long to respond as Neymar restored parity inside 10 minutes. Adrien Rabiot won the ball in midfield and drove forward, before threading through for Neymar on the left of the area, and he fired low across Craig Gordon into the corner to make it 1-1.
Not deterred by the quick reply, Celtic continued on the front foot and went close twice in quick succession as Dembele scuffed a volley wide after a cutback from Ntcham, before the Celtic midfielder saw an effort of his own sail just past the post from 25 yards out.
Despite the positive start from Brendan Rodgers’ side, Neymar put PSG into the lead 21 minutes in, just moments after Ntcham’s effort. It was a similar goal to his equaliser, and the Brazilian star played a quick one-two with Marco Verratti before firing across Gordon once again into the bottom corner for his second of the match.
The Parisian giants were very much in their stride after the second goal and a third soon followed inside half an hour. Dani Alves whipped a cross to the back post and Neymar headed back across goal towards Cavani, who dutifully tapped in from close range to extend PSG’s lead.
It was defence against attack and just a matter of time before the fourth goal went in, and Kylian Mbappe was on hand to provide it with his side’s fourth shot on target.. Neymar swung a free kick into the area and Celtic failed to clear as Marquinhos passed it to Mbappe inside the area, and the French striker took a touch before firing inside the far post, leaving Gordon with no chance.
Gordon was finally able to make a save after 41 minutes when he reacted well to Mbappe’s first-time volley after an excellent ball over the top from Neymar, and he beat the effort away for a corner.
Unai Emery’s side then came close to a fifth in first-half stoppage time, but Marquinhos failed to direct the ball goalwards after another dangerous free-kick from Neymar.
The second half started in a quiet fashion, with the home side clearly taking their foot off the gas with the result all but certain after a clinical performance in the first half.
Celtic continued to be camped inside their own half and PSG spurned a couple of chances with Cavani flicking the ball up for himself before volleying over the bar, and Marquinhos heading over form a Neymar corner.
The Scottish champions managed to hold on for half an hour in the second period but PSG decided to turn on the style once again and they scored three more goals in the final 15 minutes to really demonstrate their lethal attacking prowess
Mbappe raced past Kieran Tierney down the right before cutting the ball back and Dedryck Boyata’s poor touch laid the ball of perfectly for Verratti, who made no mistake and fired low into the corner to make it 5-1.
Then, five minutes later, Layvin Kurzawa’s cross came to Cavani at the back post and the Uruguayan striker fired a first-time volley in off the far post for his second goal of the evening.
Finally, seconds after the sixth goal, Dani Alves got in on the act and he fired an effort as straight as an arrow into the far corner from 25 yards out after Javier Pastore laid the ball back to him.
With the seven tonight, the side from the French capital have now scored more goals in a single Champions League group stage than any side ever, with 24 goals and one group game still remaining.
PSG have already secured qualification to the knockout stages, and can seal first place in Group B with a match against Bayern Munich still to come, but they will certainly be the team to beat in the latter stages of the Champions League, demonstrating their frightening form and attacking prowess in the group stage.
Brendan Rodgers will be disappointed with the scoreline, but will take solace in the fact Anderlecht were defeated by Bayern Munich, meaning that Celtic are in prime position to secure a spot in the Europa League with a third place finish.
