Jose Mourinho’s team advance with a 3-2 win on aggregate, courtesy of their 2-0 win in the first leg which was perhaps at the back of their minds for most of the first half as they showed no attacking intent.
In stark contrast, Hull came out believing the final berth is up for the taking, missed a couple of good chances, put United under pressure and deserved to go ahead in the 35th minute, although the penalty that led to Tom Huddlestone’s goal was dubious.
United showed a much improved attitude after the break and although they had two penalty appeals rejected, Paul Pogba scored in the 66th minute to tie the score at 1-1 and all but seal the Red Devils’ place in the final.
Hull have it their all in the final minutes despite facing the impossible task of needing three goals in just over 20 minutes and Niasse at least rewarded the local fans with the winning goal in the 85th minute.
