Nemanja Matic joined Manchester United and reunited with Jose Mourinho after joining from Chelsea for a fee of £40 million. What can we expect the midfielder to offer this season and how can help United to reach the next level this season?
First of all, Matic is a winner. He has won the Premier League in 2 out of the last 3 seasons, playing a key role in Mourinho's Chelsea side of 2014/15. This kind of experience could be invaluable for United, a club who haven't come close to winning the title since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013. Winners are crucial if you want to build a team who can challenge. Not to mention that the signing of Matic has appeared to weaken fellow challengers Chelsea.
Next, it is clear that United lack a physical defensive presence in midfield. Whilst Ander Herrera can offer the physical side, he is not a standard defensive midfielder and Michael Carrick is now 36 so unlikely to be playing week in, week out. Therefore Matic can provide an extra dimension which United's midfield has previously been lacking.
The Serbian international could also bring the best out of £89m midfielder Paul Pogba, who arguably flattered to deceive last season. Knowing that Matic is in midfield to shield the back four, this gives Pogba more of a licence to roam forward and focus on creating more chances for United rather than his defensive responsibilities. With Matic as a safety net, the United midfielders and attackers can have more freedom in the final third, which could prove very fruitful with new signing Lukaku up top for the Red Devils.
Although the £40m price does seem excessive for a 29-year-old, he could easily make up for his price tag and has the potential to be a top class signing for United.
