Interested, Arsene? Ex-Arsenal striker Eduardo leaves Shakhtar

If Arsene Wenger is looking to add another striker to Arsenal's ranks this January, he could bring a familiar face back to the club without spending a penny.

Ex-Gunners forward Eduardo da Silva, who played for the club between 2007 and 2010, has become a free agent after his contract at Shakhtar Donetsk expired.

Eduardo was a popular figure in north London and had already scored 12 goals by February of the 2007-08 campaign before he suffered a gruesome broken leg against Birmingham City - an incident and match that was seen as a major turning point in Arsenal's failed bid for the Premier League title.

He made just a handful of appearances the following season and struggled to rediscover his scoring touch after making a full comeback in 2009-10, netting just six times in 32 matches.

Now 33, Eduardo spent four seasons at Shakhtar and two with Flamengo before returning to the Ukrainian club in 2015-16 and enjoying his best year since he signed for Arsenal, scoring 12 goals in 19 league games.

His contract was only for 18 months from the summer of 2015, however, and he has now been released after scoring twice in 10 appearances this season.

Wenger has previously brought the likes of Thierry Henry and Sol Campbell back to the club in the later years of their careers, but Alexis Sanchez's prolific form may make a boost to his attacking options unnecessary.
