Beckham and Ronaldinho (Real Madrid and Barcelona)
Real Madrid had come to an agreement with the Brazilian while Barcelona seemed to have completed a deal for Beckham. However, both players ended up signing for the opposite teams. Ronaldinho's arrival at Barcelona started a golden era of titles which is still very much alive.
Tim Sherwood and Zidane (Blackburn Rovers)
Blackburn were eyeing up an offer for Zidane but in the moment of truth, Rovers went for Sherwood. To be fair, Sherwood captained the side to their only Premier League trophy, but they must surely feel they missed a trick by not signing Zidane.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma (Valencia)
Valencia were in advanced stages to sign Ricardo Quaresma, a deal which gave them first option on Ronaldo. Unfortunately for 'Los Che', Quaresma went to Barcelona and the option to sign Ronaldo disappeared.
Maradona (Sheffield United)
The English side showed great interest in the forward. They negotiated with Argentinos Juniors but couldn't afford the £200,000 necessary to bring the legendary striker to Bramall Lane
Messi and Puyol (Barcelona Cadiz and Malaga)
Both had the option to leave the club on loan before breaking into the first-team. Rijkard stopped Messi joining Cadiz and Puyol broke his agreement with Malaga at the last minute. Time will surely tell us why they didn't leave.
