Brazil former football star Ronaldinho quits Fluminense

Fluminense said in a statement late Monday that the split was "amicable and mutually agreed by both sides".

Ronaldinho, a two-time World Player of the Year and star of Brazil's 2002 World Cup winning team, told Globo news site that he was leaving for "personal reasons".

"I was very proud to wear this shirt," he said on Facebook. "Thanks to all the fans at Fluminense!!!"

The 35-year-old forward did not score or make assists during his nine appearances at Fluminense and was booed on several occasions by his own fans. His commercial impact was more notable.

"The contract met expectations in relation to returns from marketing, boosting ticket sales, the sales of shirts and number of members," the club said in its statement.

Fluminense has been sinking steadily and is now 12th in the league table.

Ronaldinho started his career with hometown club Gremio of Porto Alegre before moving to Europe where he starred with Paris Saint Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan.

He then returned to Brazil representing Flamengo (2011-2012) and Atletico Mineiro (2012-2014) with whom he won the Copa Libertadores in 2013.
