Many national football associations have shown their condolencesfor the vtictims, including Spain, Paraguay and Brazil and high-profile players such as Neymar and Casillas have publicly sent messages of support.
At the moment of the tragedy, Chapecoense were making history with their partcipation in the Copa Sudamericana final, being a modest side that were playing in the Fourth Division of Brazilian football barely five years ago.
The president of Atletico Nacional has offered to help as much as he possibly could.
The early hours
In the early hours of the morning, the news broke that the flight to Colombia carrying players and staff of Chapocoense had crashed in Antioquia. The final of the Copa Sudamericana was quickly suspended and then shortly after CONMEBOL confirmed that all South American football competitions would be suspended.
At first, it was confirmed that 25 had died, but quickly it was thought that there wouldn't be more than six survivors among the 81 passengers on the flight. The lists of those who did and didn't fly circulated on social media in order to recognise who may have died in the event.
It was thought that the plane had broken into two parts before the accident, that rescue teams had ground to a halt due to low visibility and that a video of the plane's radar had been leaked, showing the flight disappear from the radar.
One theory is that the plane ran out of fuel and new photos of the incident have started to circulate on social media.
The survivors
Six people of the entire party are still alive, three of them being Chapecoense players. Defender Alan Ruschel was taken to hospital and was said to be in a critical, but stable condition. Substitute goalkeeper Jackson Follmann survived the clash, while Helio Neto is the final survivor.
